Jonas Poppe makes music that no one knew how badly they needed it. As Oum Shatt, together with Chris Imler and Jörg Wolschina, he combines his passion for Arabic and Turkish music with surf-tinged rock ’n’ roll while summing up the absurdity of the daily grind. With no frills and at a slacker’s pace, their 2016 debut self-titled album called for »Power to the Women of the Morning Shift,« slept through an economic crisis and failed miserably at love. David Byrne is probably the only other person who could have come up with this, but he probably wouldn’t have gotten it right. That’s why Oum Shatt were needed, even though no one knew it yet.
