Transformation, not stagnation: for Jam Rostron, hardly anything is truly set in stone. It’s clear in the name Planningtorock itself, because the plan never came to fruition, but the project yielded something even better. Instead of rock we hear experimental pop, somewhere between gender-studies proseminar and club, which means a conceptual framework built on plenty of groove. But while Rostron does transcend the binary boundaries with intense manipulation of their voice, an album like last year’s DFA-released »Powerhouse« evades any reductive attributions. With Planningtorock, transformation is both Rostron’s artistic practice and their self-expression: »I feel a transformation in me / All those empty spaces in me / Are filling up with me…« Stagnation means dying on the inside, and it’s also deadly dull.
