Without the work, lifeblood and elbow grease that the city's many young promoters contribute, Berlin would look much different – dull and bloodless. We're aiming to enter a productive exchange with them through »Pop-Kultur lokal,« the program we launched last year with Dominique Schweizer and »Off-Kultur.« Four events out of 33 applications were selected by an independent jury, which will in turn be funded by us. Leading up to the festival – happening from the 21st to the 23rd of August – they will open up new perspectives each month from April through July. And since we believe that pop culture should be for everyone, we are making sure that each edition of »Pop-Kultur lokal« has free entry.

In November of 2018, Izumi Yamamoto first started the series »Grüntaler«, named after a street in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen, but its events aren't at one fixed location. Instead, »Grüntaler« wanders from one place to the next and lets the participating artists interact with their surroundings via music, performance and visual art. On the 25th of April 2019, the series is guesting with a new Pop-Kultur-funded event in the freshly opened Kosmetiksalon Babette, situated on the grounds of the Kindl-Brauerei in Neukölln.

In line with the series' »emphasis on gender diversity and visibility within the male-dominant field of contemporary music,« the event focuses on a female composer active since 1990 whose work – at the intersection of science and art, installation and composition – can hardly be overestimated. The electroacoustic compositions of the BAFTA Award-winning British artist Kaffe Matthews tend to be site-specific while reflecting her background as trained violinist as much as her ongoing engagement with digital technology.

She will be joined by the tireless mastering engineer Rashad Becker, who found his own sonic language on the two-part album cycle »Traditional Music Of Notional Species« on PAN, as well as the project Ganzfeld. Since 2013, Liz Allbee and Sukandar Kartadinata have been using this name as they use modified instruments to create a soundscape in whichever given space. For one evening, Babette will be given its own unique, auditory makeover.
