Swans are the most radical band of the last 40 years of pop culture. With »Where Does a Body End?,« director Marco Porsia has created a monument for them as monumental as Swans’ albums themselves. The film, which is celebrating its German premiere at Pop-Kultur, follows the beginnings of Michael Gira’s group amidst New York’s no wave scene through to the present of the reunited band in 2019, drawing on previously unreleased archive material as well as extensive interviews with Gira’s many companions, including Swans members Jarboe and Thor Harris as well as acquaintances and fans such as Amanda Palmer, Blixa Bargeld and Thurston Moore. All of this combined makes »Where Does a Body End?« more than just a documentary about Swans and their mastermind; it’s much more a testament to a life so radically dedicated to art like no other.
