Ah! Kosmos

What does the »Ah!« in Başak Günak’s pseudonym actually mean? Is it a deep sigh in the face of the mess of things? »Ah! Cosmos, you poor thing!«? Or is it more like a squeak of exuberance: »Ah! Cosmos, how are we poor things let into your existence?«? Actually, Günak's records each suggest another interpretation. That the Berlin-based Turk called her first LP on Denovali »Bastards« and titled its follow-up on Compost »Beautiful Swamp« is a sufficient indicator of the paradigm shift in her work. Darkly colorful, experimental sound design that gives way to brighter tones and groove-oriented rhythms. In the best case, the subdued deep-house vibes still create those melancholy undertones that make the »Ah!« in Ah! Kosmos so wonderfully ambivalent.
